Renewing your Alien Registration Card in Korea — when to file, what to bring
The ARC renewal process in Korea is not hard, but it is very specific about paperwork. Show up missing one thing and you get sent home. This is the checklist I use.
When to file. You can start the renewal application up to 2 months before your visa expires. Do not wait until the last month. Immigration appointment slots fill 4-6 weeks out in Seoul — longer near university semester boundaries. Aim to book your appointment 6-8 weeks before expiry.
Where. Your local Immigration Office, based on your registered address. Seoul has offices in Yangcheon, Sejong-ro, Suyu, and Omokgyo. Not all offices process all visa types — check HiKorea before you book.
What to bring:
- Passport (original + a copy of the info page).
- Current ARC — they'll take it back and issue a new one.
- One color photo, 3.5 x 4.5 cm, taken in the last 6 months, white background.
- Application form — fill it in advance from HiKorea, print, sign.
- Proof of address — a copy of your lease, or a 확정일자 stamp if you have one.
- Visa-specific documents. D-2 (student) needs a certificate of enrollment. E-7 needs an employment contract + certificate of employment. F-visas need marriage or family relation documents.
- Fee — usually 30,000₩ for a renewal. Card accepted at most offices now.
What actually happens at the office. Take a number. Wait. Present documents. They may hand things back and ask for things they need. You'll get a receipt with a pickup date, usually 2-3 weeks later. Some offices mail the card; some make you come back. Ask.
Two things that trip people up:
- Your address on the ARC must match your current residence. If you moved and didn't update within 14 days, they will notice and there will be a fine (usually 100,000-300,000₩).
- If your visa status has any pending issue — unpaid taxes, an old fine — it will surface here. Better to sort it out beforehand.
The whole thing takes about 90 minutes at the office. Bring a book.
