Olive Young is a maze. Beauty tourists walk in with 3 hours and $500 and walk out with 40 sheet masks and no toner. Here's the game plan I use.
Rule 1: go with a list. Actual paper or notes app. Know what category you need (cleanser, toner, sunscreen, whatever). Don't decide inside the store.
Rule 2: skip the front tables. Front tables = whatever the store is being paid to push that month. Not necessarily bad, but not what you came for. Walk past.
Rule 3: brands worth stocking up on because they're cheaper here than abroad:
- Beauty of Joseon (sunscreen, serums)
- Round Lab (toner, cleansers)
- COSRX (spot treatment — the pimple patches are like $2)
- Torriden (Dive-In serum, the 3D cream)
- Anua (heartleaf toner)
- Isntree (hyaluronic toner)
Rule 4: get the membership card at checkout. It's free, points accumulate fast if you're buying a haul. Even a tourist can use it.
Rule 5: sales are cyclical. Beginning of each month = biggest sales (they call it the '올영세일'). If you can time your visit around the 1st–10th of a month, you'll save a lot.
Rule 6: don't buy foundation there. Korean shades run pale + pink. Unless you know your exact color match, get foundation from a brand that ships worldwide. Everything else — go.
