Olive Young sunscreen shortlist for tourists (what actually ships well through customs)
Two things happen when you buy Korean sunscreen to take home: you realize it's genuinely better than what you were using, and some of it explodes in your bag or gets flagged at customs. Here's my traveler-tested shortlist.
The safe bets that survive luggage:
- Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun — tube, tight cap, doesn't leak. About 12,000₩. The one I put in every friend's care package.
- Isntree Hyaluronic Watery Sun Gel — pump bottle, secure. Slightly more expensive (~18,000₩) but lightweight for hot-weather countries.
- Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing Sunscreen — 20,000₩ range. Very hydrating, good for dry climates.
Skip if you're flying (they leak):
- Cushion-format sunscreens — pressure changes will make them go weird.
- Any product in a very soft tube — Missha All Around Safe Block has been a tragedy in three of my suitcases.
Customs reality check: most countries let you bring in reasonable personal-use quantities (under about 2 kg total cosmetics is a safe rule of thumb). If you're buying 30 tubes to resell, that's a different problem and you already know that.
One thing nobody mentions: the SPF factor on Korean sunscreens is often calculated slightly differently than in the US. It's not a scam — it's the ISO standard that most of the world uses. Just apply the amount they tell you to. Actually apply it. Twice a day. That's the whole game.
